Director’s View
“When Wind Blows on a Balcony” is inspired by James Joyce’s short story, “A Little Cloud” in his 1914 collection, “Dubliners”, and the story of my mom. While Joyce’s story tells a story between two men and takes place in a bar in Dublin, I attempted to approach the main conflict in a more contemporary way with feminist perspectives, which led me to create a new story between two women inspired by my mom’s personal life. My mom used to pursue her degree at an art school, but she ended up giving it up by complying with patriarchy and fully devoted herself to taking care of her family. That being said, for me, it is not only just a story about women, it is also a story about choosing different lifestyles and moral values. I do not think there is only one answer in life and that life is never as simple as black and white. When we earn something, there must be some sacrifice. Likewise, as we sacrifice, there must be some rewards. That is the reason I did not want to tell the audience what to choose but to reflect on the meanings of our choices at the end of the film.
Director Biography – Sche-Hao Wang
Sche-Hao “Thomas” Wang is an award-winning director and editor from Taiwan.
His work often combines artistic vision with profound storytelling, capturing the intricacies of the human experience.
He was educated at National Taiwan University and received double bachelor’s degrees in Drama & Theatre and Philosophy.
During his time at university, he honed his skills in both performance and critical analysis, preparing him for a multifaceted career in film.
He is pursuing Film and Television Production MFA at University of Southern California.
Wang’s passion for storytelling drives his creative process, as he seeks to highlight underrepresented voices in the industry.
He is particularly interested in exploring human relationships and disclosing the sparks of human nature.
His unique storytelling approach has garnered attention and accolades, allowing him to establish a promising career in the competitive film landscape.
His films were selected for multiple film festivals worldwide, including Los Angeles Film Awards, Boston Independent Film Awards, and Paris International Short festival..
Through his cinematic lens, he aims to bridge cultural gaps and foster deeper understanding among diverse audiences.
